Sue Van Der Hout - Partner



Susan Van Der Hout has an LL.B (Bachelor of Laws) from Osgoode Hall Law School (1978), and an LL.M (Master of Laws) from the University of Toronto Law School (1980). She is a Trained Mediator (2004) and has a Certificate in Family Business Advising from the Family Firm Institute, Boston (2006).

From 1979-1999 she was counsel at the Department of Justice arguing cases at the Tax Court of Canada, Federal Court of Appeal and Supreme Court of Canada. In 1992, she was a Policy Advisor and Research Analyst for the Province of Ontario. In 1999 she won Law v. Canada in the Supreme Court of Canada, a case defining the meaning of equality under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which remains the standard for determining what equality means in Canada under the Charter. From 1999-2003 she was a partner at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt, one of Canada’s leading law firms, providing tax solutions to clients and winning in excess of $60M in court challenges.

Sue has taught Tax Administration in LL.M programs in Canada and in Australia, participated in many lectures and seminars and is a prolific writer on tax management and administration.

Since leaving the practice of law, she has divided her time between investment banking, family communications consulting and the launch of a Women’s web magazine supporting women’s career development, Girlphyte.com.

As a Partner of STS Capital Partners, she has worked with families and businesses to construct winning divestiture and wealth management solutions. As a partner with Dr. Julie Morton, a Ph.D. in communications, in Strategic Legacy Solutions she works with families and high net worth individuals to engage in effective conversations regarding succession and wealth management.

Sue is active in many organizations including the Association for Corporate Growth, Women in Capital Markets, Canadian Tax Foundation, Women’s Executive Network and Women Entrepreneurs of Canada and an involved supporter of a number of charities including the Toronto Grace Hospital Foundation, the Breast Cancer Foundation and Baycrest Hospital.
